The psychology of food

We decide to lose weight for several reasons: we do not like the way we look, our clothes do not fit, our health, our significant others are wrong, our job is in danger, or our children are embarrassed charge . We tend to think of weight loss as something that only our bodies, to be sure no one ever decided to lose weight due to fat brain or mind blowing.

Yet "we decide" is a mental function. When and why do such a decision depends on our mind, not oursbody. We can see the decision as there are five pounds heavier than we would like, or after passing the mark of 200 pounds and entering the real obesity medicine. The actual size of the body does not lead to weight the decision as a choice made in the brain to lose.

From the beginning (and continuing) of a diet program is a mental process, it seems worthwhile to explore what triggers such a decision.

1. Self-image.

Each of us has a dual image:let's face the world and our internal idea of how we look. Even if we dress and groom ourselves, in an attempt to be seen as attractive by others, there is much less influenced by others by our satisfaction or dissatisfaction with ourselves.

Explore this concept by observing themselves and others during the following week. You will find that you often receive compliments on the clothes you wear, you do not feel "quite right." Wear a favorite outfit that fitsperfect, that you think looks good, and that makes you most proud of - and nobody notices! The same phenomenon occurs with a haircut. One morning, he rushed for time, you can not your hair to do something, so upset with the clip you pull back and hope that nobody you care about looking so bad. Voila! Three people say they want what you did with your hair.

There is the same pair when it comes to our weight. If we look into the eyes of our mind, wedo not feel fat even when friends and colleagues whisper about our weight gain constant. However, if we see ourselves as obesity, no amount of reassurance from the people around us feel less fat. At the extreme, this mental image of our body formed to bring the eating disorder anorexia nervosa in which people remain painfully thin dangerously restrict their calorie intake, because constantly consider themselves overweight.

We decided to go indiet, so, in response to our inner self. Some of the benefits we expected to go ahead with its slim and others consider: I'll be more attractive to the opposite sex, I noticed at work when it's time for a promotion, my family and friends will be jealous and re- consider me as a stronger person than they had imagined. But the real profit for getting in shape is what he does for us. E 'the desire to feel good about ourselvesWhich brings us through the pain and monotony of the diet and exercise. It 's the vision of ourselves in our mind that guides us towards our goal. Vision loss, or the conclusion that we do not feel much better about ourselves, and give the reasons why we fall in relative comfort to settle for just "okay".

2. Body against the dominant mind.

We all pay a permanent internal battle between our body and mind. Each is dominant in various stages of development. Ifchildren, there are little more than a collection of sensations. We explore the exciting new world around us through everything at your fingertips touching and tasting everything we can in his mouth, watching the movements of all that surrounds us, and hear all the sounds we hear, until finally learn to imitate them.

As we move into our first year of school, we begin to focus on our minds. We avidly devour huge amounts of information. We learn to read and our worldexpanding the boundaries of a small percentage thousand. We learn to use the Internet and an infinite universe, at your fingertips.

Come on in puberty, and at night, our appearance is the dominant factor in our daily lives. We navigate the pitfalls and pleasures of adolescence, where popularity and being cool as much more important than just a learning or mental development. We spend an inordinate amount of time on our bodies. We are looking for new clothes, new hairstyles and makeup again. Webody parts are pierced and suffer the pain of a tattoo, because it will make us stand out. We primp and groom ourselves and our existing styles colleagues evaluated as "in"

As we mature, we focus on our mental and physical balance. While our body prevails in attracting one-size-environment, we must exercise our minds to our careers and to foster relationships that go far deeper than physical attraction develop.

E 'when we settle down and startthe construction of the good life we want, that our efforts and energy back to the things around us: children, significant others, friends, family and work activities. We have so much going on around us and much to do that we lose touch with both our bodies and minds. We slip into our comfort zone right where so many of our needs will be met by food. Eases our fears, our free frequent frustrations, and makes periodic attacks of the blues bearable. The oil our social interactions. L 'is an important component in the way of showing affection for those we love. We continue to see ourselves as we have always been and love handles and pockets of fat that they stick to parts of our body that we resolutely ignore ignore. Our body and the internal image of our body, more and more dissonant.

3. Our sense of self-efficacy.

Self-efficacy is a term used in psychology to describe a personal conviction that the actions have an impact onoutcome. It is not the confidence or belief that it is competent to do something, although it may involve both. It reflects our inner expectation that what we do affects the results we want.

If I miss this faith, I am afraid I do not wish to take my goal. Adjacent to impotence, leading to self-destructive thoughts:

"No matter how much I diet, I lost weight ..." "I got to work every day, but I'll never get rid of these youngthighs. . . "I try to eat healthy, but my hips just keep spreading..." No matter what techniques to try, nothing to worry about keeping the wrinkles. . . "

If I have a strong sense of self-efficacy, my beliefs and thought patterns of play:

"All I do is motivated and I can see my body in the form of a whip in a couple of weeks ..." "I just need to choose a date to start my diet and I'll be on my way. .. If you" "Perhaps I have neglected for a while ', but some hardwork will bring me back. . . "

Or do not you start a diet, may decide to get into shape, or taking better care of ourselves, then, is a personal decision whether or not as we had planned to start. The difference lies in the hope of success and it is always easier to postpone a trip we expect to be what happened to drag ourselves to a goal when the failure is the most likely outcome.

How do we combine these concepts to our work in ourdesire to be lean, fit and attractive?

We begin by examining our self-image and how we present ourselves to others. Others only ask "Do you think we get too heavy?" not work unless you have a brutally honest friend or ask someone who hates you. Many of us are culturally trained to others 'feelings' to save money, so the reactions to this question are likely to be more polite than true.

Focusing on specific could produce better feedback. Tell everyone that you fill in aSearch for a class you take. The hand of a short questionnaire page to request that any friend or colleague From the three different aspects of adjectives to describe your physical appearance. Enter one of the cymbals. Make sure that the responses are anonymous, requiring that no names be used and that someone else to collect the completed sheets.

Once you reply again, compare your answers and see where the different descriptions. You may beget some 'on the defensive: "My hips are not so great my clothes make me look ...." This fine is not an exercise to make you feel badly about yourself, or for you to gloat on the comments you've received an unexpected free. This is an organized attempt to help you and your self-image motion picture-in-the-world apart. These areas of divergence is a starting point in an effort to bring the two images overlap.

Once the areas where work is needed are identified,It 's time to call about the immense power of our great minds to start imposing structure and organization we need to make the desired changes. Our minds can only us where we want to go if it is supported by a belief in our ability to reach a successful conclusion. Now is the time to expectations of failure to dismiss. There are many diets and failed attempts to fitness in the past. Leave them in the past. We are not in some way to continueunproductive behavior forever. We have this jewel of evolution, the human mind, capable of everything. If our mind on a task would be fulfilled, and our doubts and objections will not get in your way.

We build our positive expectations, exploring our memory, in order to accumulate a long list of previous successes. There may be as important reference points, such as the creation of a promotion we have organized a fantastic event, or ourselves in hard worksatisfactory report. However, small personal victories are more influential, but they usually are quickly forgotten or discounted as unimportant.

Study hard and get good quality in a difficult class clearly demonstrates the ability to achieve the desired results. Go for quantity: the day you smiled at someone in a smoky room and ended with a short but beautiful story, the report sets the time that nobody expected, the night that a spider on the skating knee. Pressis: to make the drilling team, the registration of a basket stolen, making your own dress, dying your hair a wonderful color in your bathroom, catching a fly ball, finding a new software on your computer, to burn the first CD. The list can be endless and, as you remember fragments of the past that you want to be buried under more important things.

Keep this list nearby and regularly. It 's your personal pep squad self-efficacy.

Now you know the areaswe will work on and develop a belief in the effectiveness of your efforts. You now have the internal rewards that will identify the weight loss success. Feeling good about yourself, enjoy the wide and easy to compress your clothes are easy starters. Unselfconsciously walk to the pool in a short dress is an improvement to dream. Making a sales presentation with the assurance that you are looking your absolute best to enjoy a picture if yousleep. Seeing someone you love admiring look at you, or view your fellow competitors jealous, emphasizes your decision and you go through the inconvenience of the diet and the demands of boredom.

You know where you're going, you know what it takes, and you know you're going to succeed. Your mind is ready, just waiting for the day of your decision. Make this decision when you choose because it is now under control.
